Plenty of things are worse than walking up on a snake, they are just... hard to think of in the moment.

One afternoon in late May, I decided to join my grandchildren at the neighborhood pool. Ambling along, enjoying the sounds of children splashing and laughing, I was near the gate when I saw something stretched across the sidewalk.
